Click to Play

The game was deceptively simple at first. Tap this button on the screen once every few seconds. Then tap it twice or three times or in a certain order, all no more complicated than playing Simon says. Except Simon hated me. Simon kept going faster and faster, changing the size and the area of the screen that must be clicked. The pattern and arrangement of the buttons kept changing. I finally missed a stroke and made a noise half-grunt, half-whimper, my eyes going to the wires running from my phone to the small device on Val’s chest. It was rather like an insulin pump, threadlike wires plugged into her heart. Nervous now, I missed another beat and she began to thrash. Val was dying. Game over.
