Some Thing’s Change

I hadn’t seen a payphone in so long I stared at the sheer novelty of it. It looked dusty and unused, but out of long habit I casually diverted over to it and dipped my finger inside the coin return slot, checking for any change. Tiny clawed hands, unnaturally strong, grabbed my finger and held it like a metal vise. A rat-like voice hissed out of the coin return, “Got any change, mister?”
