We sewed his eye shut and then carved a message into his forehead, “Do not open ’til Xmas!”

We hope he likes the present we left behind.

Process of Elimination

The creature’s mask was very lifelike. When I stood up from the old woman’s body I whispered a useless apology. I had guessed wrong and now she was dead. It had killed all the others, but this death belonged to me. There were only two of us left now. One of us used to be human and one of us was never human to begin with. I wasn’t sure which was which anymore.

I thanked the man who had returned my wallet even as I was checking its contents. When I realized my driver’s license had a picture of his face instead of mine I looked up and saw the razor glittering in his hand.

His Old Lady

The bartender was curled up in the doorway of his own place like he was some kind of wino instead of the guy who wrote the schedules and signed the checks. He was muttering to himself when the delivery guy found him. Something about an old motorcycle parked outside the bar last night. The guy who used to ride it went missing something like thirty years ago. The bike looked like someone had dragged it there from a scrapyard. The missing guy was on it with the bartender’s wife – – both of them dead. The guy wasn’t much more than bones after so many years. The bartender’s wife was still fresh. The delivery guy looked for it, but the bike and his wife with it, were gone. So was the bartender’s sanity.

Innocents enter by the front door. A secret admirer leaves bloody gifts. Music and wine late into the night. In the morning nothing is found but their skins.

About Face

After thirty years of hard living the mirror was not very kind to me anymore. Some days I woke up and the face looking back at me had no eyes. Those were the good days, because I could not actually see anything. Other days I woke up and had no mouth. Those days were worse, because I couldn’t scream for help.
